Every Picture Tells A Story

Apr 6 - 10, 2019

Medium: Fabric

Level: All Levels

3-Day Studio Class

This workshop will focus on looking at the different ways of working figuratively from the substantial and serious to the light-hearted and whimsical. During the workshop you will have the option to create some characters, add text and narrative elements, make experimental machine stitch studies, or start a piece of work using your own drawings or photographs as inspiration. The aim of the workshop is to encourage exploration and experimentation with different ways to tell your own story using images and anecdotes to convey ideas, thoughts and memories.

For those who are worried about their drawing ability, Sue will provide some simple black & white guides as a base from which to work. By the end of the workshop you will have new ideas with which to work and the necessary skills to develop your own work further.

The workshop may include sessions such as:

  1. A short digital presentation looking at the ways that different artists tell their stories.
  2. How to use your own drawings, illustrations or photographs as a starting point.
  3. How to start a piece of work using some of the simple processes Sue uses herself including transferring an image to fabric, free machine stitch sketches (optional), different types of appliqué, and drawing with hand and/or machine stitch to make text.
  4. How to use sampling as an aid to deciding which techniques to use.

Please note, this can be a hand stitch or a hand and machine stitch workshop and it is suitable for all abilities.

About Sue Stone

Sue Stone is a UK based textile artist who studied Fashion at St Martins School of Art and then Embroidery at Goldsmiths College in London. She is current chair and exhibiting member of the 62 Group of Textile Artists and a Fellow of the Society of Designer Craftsmen. She’s best known for textural, figurative compositions that often feature a fish.

Built in layers, Sue’s mixed media compositions contrast the slow building of an image in hand stitch with the spontaneity of free machine stitch and paint. Disparate images of the real are combined with the imagined, the remembered, and sometimes the nonsensical to create a partial narrative with a slightly surreal sense of humor which the viewer is invited to complete.

Sue’s most recent work has an emphasis on hand embroidery and is a personal examination of memory, identity, and relationships with self; the viewer is invited to view the partial narrative and draw their own conclusions.
