Creating Shadow and Depth with Sheers
April 20 – 26, 2008
All Levels

Fiber artist Margot Lovinger is best known for her realistic and unique portraits and figure studies in fabrics and embroidery.  She has exhibited her work in galleries all over the country, developing an enthusiastic following and earning critical praise.  Her educational background in Fine Arts and fascination with classical figure painting informs her innovative, painterly technique.

In this workshop, students are shown how to use Margot’s technique of layering sheer fabrics to create depth and shadow and to modulate color.  This technique is executed entirely by hand, so sewing machines are not necessary.  Traditional sewing skills in general are not really necessary, however though proficiency using a needle and thread will speed things along significantly.

Margot discusses how to select images and photographs that are most conducive to use in this technique; how to create a dynamic composition; how to analyze photographs to create a “map” for the piece; selecting fabrics and determining your color palette; fusing, stitching and tacking techniques to assemble your work; embellishment with stitching, embroidery and beads; and mounting techniques to create a finished product.  The goal for each student is to finish the workshop with one completed piece and the understanding and insight that allows you to continue to work further with this technique and incorporate it into your own style.
