Tempting the Muse: Mixed Media

May 11 - 17, 2009

All Levels

This guided studio focuses on  generating ideas for personal imagery and then giving those ideas form. With a focus on creative process, we will explore ways of bringing our inspiration to our medium of choice. Individual and group instruction will focus on developing ideas and on defining and exploring self-direction.

Group exercises and discussion will focus on color, line/edge, size/scale and the relationships between materials and meaning.

Participants may choose to work on a number of small pieces or to work on one larger piece. Collage and embellishment techniques may be explored and used to further push the surface.

Instruction will be highly personalized.

The evening program will include topics such as nurturing the creative self, getting around an “artist’s block” and building a series.

Laura Cater-Woods is a full time studio artist with an extensive exhibition record and numerous awards.  Her work is held in many public and private collections.  After completing an MFA in Painting she began to integrate her love of fabric and thread with her approach to drawing and painting.  Her mixed media  images explore the textures and rhythms of details from the landscape, often interwoven with eccentric grids.

She has completed commissions for Public Art and Percent for Art Projects, including Montana State Hospital at Warm Springs and the HORSE of course! project in Billings and recently completed a site-specific mural for the Montana Development Center. In 1998-99 she was honored with a Montana Arts Council Fellowship in Visual Arts, Mixed Media.

Laura lives in South Central Montana where she gardens, walks along the Yellowstone River in the morning and tries to find the perfect balance between studio time and everything else.
